Orange for Ovulation: How Carotenoids Can Support Your Fertility

Phytonutrients are natural compounds found in plant foods that give them their vibrant colours and deliver a host of health benefits. Each colour in the plant kingdom is associated with specific phytonutrients and their unique contributions to our wellbeing.

When it comes to fertility, one group of phytonutrients deserves a special spotlight: carotenoids. These golden-hued compounds are responsible for the rich orange, yellow, and red tones of many fruits and vegetables, as well as the subtle yellows in leafy greens.

A creamy orange-hued sweet potato soup served in a speckled ceramic bowl, topped with crispy spiced chickpeas, a dollop of yoghurt, and a drizzle of sauce. A spoon is dipped into the soup, highlighting its thick texture. In the background, additional bowls of soup and a plate of chopped red bell pepper are visible, set on a neutral-toned surface.

What Are Carotenoids?

Carotenoids are a class of powerful antioxidants, with beta-carotene being the most well-known member. Interestingly, carotenoids don’t just appear in the classic orange and yellow produce – they’re also present in green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale. The green chlorophyll in these veggies masks the carotenoids, which become visible as they age and the green pigment fades.

Carotenoids and Female Fertility

In female fertility, carotenoids play a critical role in follicular development, the process that leads to the release of a mature egg cell during ovulation. After ovulation, the follicle transforms into the corpus luteum – a structure so rich in carotenoids that it gets its name from the Latin for “yellow body.”

The corpus luteum produces progesterone, the hormone essential for maintaining the luteal phase and supporting early pregnancy. Carotenoids, as potent antioxidants, also help protect egg cells from oxidative stress – a key factor in ensuring egg quality.

Studies have identified up to 14 different carotenoids in ovarian tissue, highlighting their importance in reproductive health.

Carotenoids and Male Fertility

Carotenoids aren’t just for women – they also play a role in male fertility. Research has shown that beta-carotene is linked to improved sperm concentration. Another carotenoid, lutein, supports sperm health by protecting cells from oxidative stress and enhancing their ability to fertilise an egg.

Where Can You Find Carotenoids?

Since the body can’t produce carotenoids on its own, we rely on dietary sources to reap their benefits. To boost your intake of carotenoids, include the following foods in your diet:

Orange and yellow fruits and vegetables:

  • Apricots
  • Bell peppers
  • Cantaloupe
  • Carrots
  • Ginger and turmeric root
  • Mango
  • Pumpkin and squash
  • Sweet potatoes

Green leafy vegetables:

  • Broccoli
  • Kale
  • Spinach

Free-range egg yolks:
Egg yolks are a fantastic source of lutein, a carotenoid with significant antioxidant properties.
